General Catalog Information
  • Institutional Policy for Undergraduate Programs*
This form may only be used for updating academic policies or introducing new policies at the undergraduate level.
  • Title*
    Policy Exception for IPS-BS Degree
    Policy Exception for IPS-BS Degree
The title identified here refers to the title of an existing policy or a new policy to be added to the undergraduate catalog
  • Is this an existing policy?
  • Does this policy need to be reciprocated at the graduate level?*
To ensure consistency in our policies at the undergraduate and graduate level, this question is designed to direct the attention of the author and councils to this important issue. When appropriate changes that necessitate update/new policies at both levels require two proposals to go through governance; one for each level.
The Proposed Policy
  • Rationale for the new/update policy proposal*
The proposal is also attached. The IPS BA and BS degrees are interdisciplinary. They are housed in IPAC. At SUNY Oswego, IPAC is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. All undergraduate CLAS Programs, regardless of them being a BA or BS, based on our policies require 90 credits of liberal Arts. The issue that we are facing is directly with stopouts who decide to return to complete their undergraduate degrees in IPS. If such a student was previously in an LAS or an SCMA program, they will be fine in terms of their progress in Liberal Arts. However, when the student was previously enrolled in a program leading to certain teacher certification programs or programs in the School of Business, they are likely going to be short of LA credits. This is due to the fact that none of the pedagogical courses or Business Admin courses the student had taken count as LA. As you will read in our policy shared below, such students, in their previous programs, needed to complete significantly fewer LA credits. The proposal here is to create an exception for individuals enrolled in the IPS BS degree that reduces their LA graduation requirement. When appropriate, we already have variations in the college catalog for All College requirements. For example, Wellness Management BS students are required to have 75 credits of LA. Furthermore, the State Education Department only requires 60 credits of LA for BS degrees. We are able to reduce the LA credit requirement for the IPS BS degree to a lower amount than its current requirement of 90. It should be noted that BA degrees require 90 credits of Liberal Arts credits; this is a requirement set by State Ed thus we are not proposing a change in the required Liberal Arts credits for IPS BA. The change in the college catalog proposed here adds a new entry to the All College requirement for Liberal Arts that requires IPS BS students to complete 75 credits in LA.
Please explain the rationale for this proposal.
