The Cannabis Studies microcredential program offers a comprehensive and specialized curriculum designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex and rapidly evolving cannabis industry. This program encompasses the robust history of cannabis and how its relationship with society has evolved across time and space. It also explores the cultivation and medicinal applications of cannabis as well as emerging trends in cannabis research, policy, and culture. The Cannabis Studies microcredential program will be delivered through a combination of lectures and practical workshops.

  • Justification for the Proposal*

Cannabis is a multibillion-dollar industry and as the legalization for recreational use continues to proliferate across the United States and abroad, there is a growing need for individuals who are qualified to participate in and cultivate this market. This is especially the case for New York and its surrounding states (and Canada) having legalized the recreational use of cannabis in some form. As this industry expands, it will require individuals who are educated in this field to carry and expand it. This microcredential would therefore be apropos to those who wish to cultivate, process, sell, regulate, or market cannabis. Moreover, such a microcredential would also be useful to those people working within the field of criminal justice, medicine, business, and policy as cannabis has a presence within all these contexts and others.

The Cannabis Studies microcredential program is tailored to individuals passionate about cannabis, whether they are industry professionals hoping to advance their careers, connoisseurs looking to enhance their knowledge, or newcomers eager to explore the diverse facets of the cannabis industry.

First, the program will be aimed at existing Lakers who are enrolled in 4-year (or graduate) degree programs and would like to add the Cannabis Studies microcredential to their degrees. As all CAN classes will also be considered upper-level electives for the Criminal Justice major, this program would likely benefit those students seeking to optimally "stack" qualifications.

Second, this program is also aimed at non-degree seeking students who are simply considering having qualifications in Cannabis Studies to help them gain employment or enhance their careers within the industry. Discussions with local industry stakeholders (in addition to letters of support) elucidate that those individuals with such a microcredital would stand out among other job applicants.
