The Curriculum and Instruction Department requests these changes to the Adolescence 7-12 Biology Concentration area to more closely match the current Biology B.A. major as well as to meet the current CAEP Standards for Initial Preparation of Teachers of Adolescence/Secondary Biology, Grades 7-12, and NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) recommendations to align the concentration with the related major. We believe that completing this concentration will result in candidates being able to demonstrate strong content knowledge that provides a strength in skills related to teaching biology. Specifically:
- We adjusted requirements in the Biology/Zoology CORE, ELECTIVE and COGNATES courses in this concentration, so that the courses more closely align with that of the Biology, B.A. major as follows:
The BIO 220 Diversity of Life course was added as a requirement to match the current Biology B.A. requirements. Previously this course was taken as a “Biology elective” area course under advisement in the concentration.
The BIO 492 Biology Research course was removed as a requirement to match the current Biology B.A. requirements. This is now a Biology elective option in this concentration.
- Changes to BIOLOGY/ZOOLOGY ELECTIVES
Advisory note added: BIO 101, BIO 203, BIO 207, BIO 211, and BIO 492 are not approved electives for students in the Biology B.A. (double major).
- Changes to COGNATES Courses
The Biology B.A. Physics course options were updated to match the current Biology B.A. major requirements. This change results in the possibility of additional credit hours depending on the students course selection. Select: PHY 101 - Introductory Physics (3 cr); or PHY 111 College Physics I (4 cr) and PHY 212 College Physics II (4cr); or PHY 112 General University Physics I (4 cr) and PHY 213 General University Physics II (4 cr).
Additional environmental science area elective course choices of AST 100 and GEO 115 have been added as acceptable course options.
