The Communication Studies Department is proposing changes in the Broadcasting and Mass Communication BA. This proposal for the separate 5 YR MBA major would match it to those changes.

Below are the justifications copied from the BRC major change proposal:
First, we are asking to change the name of the major from Broadcasting and Mass Communication to 'Broadcast and Digital Media.' The name change will reflect changes in the industry and be more accessible to contemporary students.
Second, we are also asking to add 4 tracks to the major: Digital Media Production; Sports Media Production; AND Digital and Broadcast Journalism. This change will make it easier for our students to move through their career paths. It will also be easier for prospective students to understand the full offerings in the major.
Third, we are asking to make a few changes to our core. We would like to drop COM 210: Public Speaking and Critical Thinking. Instead, we would like to require both BRC 229 and BRC 223 (currently a choice). Oral communication skills are inherent in the major and the courses required. By requiring both 229 and 223 it will give students more production skills needed to be successful in the industry.
Fourth, We would like to add BRC 355: Television Criticism to our core choices ['select one of the following' list]. It is a newer course that is regularly offered.
Fourth, we are asking to drop the 2.5 requirement for those who switch in to the major. This requirement comes from an era when we had to many students in the major relative to our staffing. Moreover, students may come from different majors that require a different skillset where the GPA does not reflect their capabilities in our major.
