General Catalog Information
  • Institutional Policy for Undergraduate Programs*
This form may only be used for updating academic policies or introducing new policies at the undergraduate level.
  • Title*
    Hyflex Modality Definition
    Hyflex Modality Definition
The title identified here refers to the title of an existing policy or a new policy to be added to the undergraduate catalog
  • Is this an existing policy?
  • Does this policy need to be reciprocated at the graduate level?*
To ensure consistency in our policies at the undergraduate and graduate level, this question is designed to direct the attention of the author and councils to this important issue. When appropriate changes that necessitate update/new policies at both levels require two proposals to go through governance; one for each level.
The Proposed Policy
  • Rationale for the new/update policy proposal*
SUNY Oswego piloted hyflex courses as part of a SUNY System Innovative Instructional Technology Grant (IITG) beginning in Fall 2022. In order to move from the pilot phase to broader use, a standard definition for the hyflex modality is needed. By defining what a hyflex course is, the university can better aid students in selecting courses during registration.
Please explain the rationale for this proposal.
  • Current Policy (if one exists)
This field should only be completed if an existing policy is proposed to be updated. Please copy the exact wording of the policy from the graduate catalog into this text area.

    SUNY Oswego HyFlex Modality Definition

    Background

SUNY IR defines a hyflex course as one that “combines online and face-to-face instruction simultaneously into one single course section, with the mode of direct instruction determined by each individual student. Students are able to choose how to participate in any given class meeting - online or face-to-face” (Open SUNY, n.d., retrieved from https://online.suny.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/SUNY-and-IPEDS-Online-Learning-Definitions-May-2020.pdf).

    Hyflex Modality Definition

A hyflex course is defined as a course section that is simultaneously facilitated on-campus and online synchronously, while also providing for asynchronous student participation. A hyflex course gives students the ability to attend class sessions either face-to-face or online (e.g., synchronous, asynchronous). Students can move among available modalities from class session to session at their discretion.
